On October 27, the Emerald Hills Institute hosted a heartfelt memorial service to honor the life and legacy of Fethullah Gülen, a visionary whose teachings have profoundly shaped the lives of many through the Hizmet Movement. It was an evening of reflection, unity, and remembrance, celebrating his enduring contributions to education, dialogue, and peacebuilding.

The service began with a warm introduction from Andrew Kosorok, who provided a thoughtful overview of Gülen’s life. He highlighted the lasting impact of Gülen’s work, his unwavering dedication to interfaith dialogue, and his commitment to community service—values that remain at the heart of the Hizmet Movement.

A serene atmosphere was set with a Quran recitation, inviting the audience to reflect on themes of spirituality and compassion.

Two poignant tribute videos followed, capturing the essence of Fethullah Gülen’s legacy and his lifelong mission to inspire positive change. These videos highlighted his dedication to education and the cultivation of a more compassionate world.

Several attendees shared their personal reflections, emphasizing how Gülen’s teachings on knowledge, tolerance, and dialogue had deeply influenced their lives. They spoke of his focus on education, his encouragement of understanding across differences, and his dedication to selflessness and compassion—values that are fundamental to his message.

After the formal remarks, the floor was opened for additional reflections. Attendees shared heartfelt stories of how Gülen’s teachings had illuminated their spiritual paths, motivated them to serve others, and left a lasting impression on their communities.

As the evening drew to a close, a final prayer brought the gathering to a peaceful conclusion. The attendees then transitioned to refreshments and socializing, creating an opportunity for informal conversation and community connection.

Traditional Turkish halva was served during the memorial, accompanied by an explanation of its cultural significance. In Turkish tradition, halva is prepared and shared at funerals to honor and remember the departed. The sweetness of the halva symbolizes hope for a peaceful afterlife and serves as a reminder of the good memories shared with the deceased.

Fethullah Gulen’s legacy continues to live on in the hearts and minds of those he inspired, and his teachings remain a source of guidance and hope for communities worldwide.
