The February 19 Law Enforcement Iftar was a meaningful evening that brought together community members and law enforcement for connection and understanding. The program opened with welcoming remarks by Zeynep Kariparduc, Chair of the Emerald Hills Institute and Chief Tanner Jensen from Utah Department of Public Safety, followed by a short Ramadan video. Sergazi Nurbavliyev, Executive Director of Emerald Hills addressed the importance of mutual collaboration between community organizations and law enforcement agencies and expressed gratitude to law enforcement for keeping communities safe. Deputy Commissioner Tyler Kotter highlighted the importance of collaboration and mutual respect and thanked Emerald Hills Institute for keeping the iftar tradition with Utah Department of Public Safety over the years. After the call for prayer, guests broke their fast at sunset and shared dinner together.
Engaging law enforcement in gatherings like this is especially valuable because it creates space for genuine dialogue outside formal settings. These moments allow officers and community members to meet as people first, building familiarity, trust, and empathy. When relationships are nurtured in this way, it strengthens communication, supports safer communities, and encourages ongoing partnership rooted in understanding rather than assumption.
